  • finished/left high school a year early and attended Saga University
  • started learning shamisen at 16 (specifically Nagauta)
  • didn't speak any Japanese when she arrived, and was the school's first and only foreigner
  • Attended Swarthmore college, where she studied cultural anthropology (grad '72)
  • returned to Japan for her junior year, studying zen at Daitokuji for the summer and schooling at Sophia University
  • anthropology at Stanford (graduate studies, masters '74)
  • graduate research on geisha's history, regional variations, and social meanings
  • Ph.D. from Stanford in '78 (The Institution of the Geisha in Modern Japanese Society = dissertation title)
  • taught at University of Chicago, married fellow professor Michael Dalby


Ichigiku

  • after 6 months of observing the geisha in Pontocho, the geisha felt she was serious about her research and suggested she try it so that she can really understand
  • already skilled at shamisen and nagauta, essential to this endeavor
  • debuted as Ichigiku and experienced the life of a novice geisha, invaluable for her research
  • Mariki teahouse in Pontocho, Kyoto
  • her geisha Okasan died in 1993 (?) and Ichiume, her oneesan, died in a fire in 1977
  • "I loved that sense of a community of women," recalls Dalby. "I had a very special relationship with my okasan, she hadn't had a daughter of her own. I really slipped into the daughter role."
