Kitagawa Hyōji is the 18th generation head of Tawaraya, a Nishijin workshop, specializing in producing woven silk for Noh theater and the Imperial household. He was designated a Living National Treasure in 1999.
Kitagawa Hyōji inherited Tawaraya from his father, Kitagawa Heirō (1898-1988), who was also designated a Living National Treasure. He has two sons, neither of whom are being trained to take over the workshop.
