All of the dances in that movie were choreographed by western people; none are truly Japanese in any real way. The dances mean nothing, after all, and just look pretty. Real 舞ãÂ

Well they had a proffesional japanese geiko person dance choreographer. But as they say in the extra scenes they just *tweaked* it. I think the traditional dance is much more beautiful, but I guess they didn't think it would appeal to the western eye

Out of curiousity, Ruisu-san, How would you feel about an American (or other non-Japanese person) wanting to wear kimono all the time? Think they could do it? (I'm interested in making my own kimono and wearing them all the time :P )

Personally, not that I'm an expert or anything (of course), but, I think the odori scene in Memoirs was, weather that choreographer guy will admit it or not, I think he actually stole much of his "original" dance from Tamasaburo's protrayal of "Sagi Masume".
Take a look for yourself:

Middle section - http://youtube.com/watch?v=kP4TdEMrNuo

I'd love to know what everyone thinks after they see those. I want to know if you got the same feeling I did.

it's been a while since i saw it in Memoirs, but I definately understand what you mean- especially the beginning and when the midle part starts with the faster dancing. It's hard to compare them when one is so short and the other longer, though (especially when you're at work and can't watch the whole thing)

If you get a chance... watch the 1st part and the 3rd back to back! and you'll REALLY see what I mean... I mean... MUCH of the memoirs "original" dance was ripped right off of it.
Oh! And here's the Memoirs "ceasure" dance...

I liked the dance beforehand too. It was pretty cool looking...I DID like all the dances in the movie, even if they were Westernized.

I couldn't stomach the MOAG dance. I had a strong feeling when I first saw the film that they did consult a Japanese person about certain moves, but, as they did with everything else with the film, simply took over and did to suit themselves.

Also, I have a feeling they westernized the dances so much because they figured western audiences would be bored with the original dances - since they are slower paced (many are), and emotional movements count much more. Just like they thought the true geisha makeup would be too "scary" for western audiences.... to quote Charlie Brown... "Good greif..."

God, Sayaka, it's ARTISTIC LICENSE, DUH. And besides, cute maiko girls in white makeup is the stuff of nightmares.

I thought the dances were just weird and then bot Rob Marshall and John Deluca pretending to be geisha experts now
