As suggested by KatyCrayon - "Bird is the Word!"
Do you collect bird motifs? Pick a piece and design an ensemble to showcase the birdies!

I do collect bird motifs... I am obsessed with them . I could probably post half of my kitsuke ever done here because of this, but let's start with something new. The kimono has some stylized phoenix (or are they pheasants?) in it, and I am wearing a golden pheasant (it's their name, but the obi is golden too ) obi with it. Let's pretend you cannot see my juban sleeves . I love the obi but hate to tie it. It is very rough material, and pulling it tight around the wait is practically impossible . Well, at least taiko will hold it's shape nicely.

Inspired by this challenge, I've printed a birds on my obi, I bought it in order to press something on it. It is a rubber print, fixated on at 168 degrees celcius, without leaving any effect at the silk or the collor in it.

stepan_san - Thank you ! Sekhet - So cute ! I have been wanting to try something similar. I wonder if the same technique could work with ro.. I really need black ro obi, but they all seem to be mofuku. Adding a print would make it look at least little less mofuku. Was the print kit thingy expensive?

I absolutely love the cute design you chose, and it looks really well done, although I don't know what rubber printing is.
Great kitsuke with it too.

Onanako nice birds on a nice clear blue. ume_bloom, rubyminky & Quat thanks Rubber print, rubber which is melted down into fibers, I like that contrast to yhe silk. muhvi the prin is a foil called "Lotus poli flex" series and usually it is sold in big units, like 10 meter, chep in the sence what I have used is like 1$ (4$ for 60cm x 100 cm). It could easily work on Ro, but I think that you might find it to massive/ thick (could work as good contrast), I personel would make a stencil in some flexsible plastic, and dab the color onto the fabric through that, then you would get the lightnes intact. if you nead product names, say so By the way, saw some interesting birds on your post the New Years Kuromontsuki do you have a photo more up front?

Holy moly! I didn't even realize this challenge made it! For now I'll post this: I am aware that this obi is waaay too formal for this komon, but they both feature birds! (And I do not own the peacock obi, but I will be owning the komon. My friend is giving it to me in exchange for me helping her at an upcoming con and giving a geisha panel there.) This komon is so amazing. Here's a closeup: Very soon I will post a picture of me finally wearing my peacock tomesode. I really want to get some outdoor pictures but the ground has just been too soggy for me to wear anything nice outside.

Onanako - Are those seagulls? I am so envious if they are . KatyCrayon – Green and red! So pretty . Sekhet - Thanks for the info . For now I don't have any suitable obi for experimenting so no need for product names. I guess I should see what local stores have to offer some day... I didn't realize my ducky kurotomesode would be suitable for this challenge too ! Here's a shot where the birds can be seen better:

muhvi Thanks, now when I see the motif a little clearer, I must admit that there is something about the scene I enjoy, I think it is the way the background forms a living frame of branches at the motif, give something magical (fairy tale), I can not remember that I have seen many kurotomesode where the background has been involved in that way, now I am also fairly new to the field KatyCrayon what a nice treat, a present like that

Gee, Sekhet, your bird obi is cute beyond words! I envy your skill... I wish I can print cute motifs like that on my obi as well... KatyCrayon, such an awesome komon, I love how detailed it is. And I love these mandarin ducks that keep appearing, mandarin ducks are so cute

Whitethistle, your kuro is sooooopretty!! I love the orange! Here is the newest edition to my bird family: a synthetic odori kimono featuring cranes, worn with my brand new obscenely yellow hakata obi of doooooom. I actually -do- have a juban now, but it's too heavy for this time of year and it was 95% humidity this night... And I had a few plum wines when this picture was taken. And here is my sparrow obidome! I didn't quite make it (my husband did) because my hand has been broken. But I did design it!

KatyCrayon - Omg that sparrow obidome is just too cute ! Adding two purple birds. First one you have seen already, the second one I found when I was digging my photo archives. Geese and nadeshiko: White peacocks on the kimono and their feathers in the obi. Two years ago they sold little white peacocks for Christmas tree decoration. I was very tempted to buy one and put it in my hair with this ensemble, but the bird was so big that it would have required a huge hairdo too. Which I cannot make. So I left them in the store. Regretting it bit now . Granny obijime .
