What's Black, White and Red All Over

IG Kitsuke Challenge guidelines:
http://www.immortalgeisha.com/ig_bb/vie ... hp?t=11787

I know there are quite a few people on IG who have a strong preference to black, red and white kimono pieces. So...get dressed and show us just what IS black, white and red all over!

Theme Guidelines:
- Outfit must be predominately black, white and red.
- Metallic accents are allowed.
- Small touches of other colours are allowed, providing they are not dominate in the outfit.

Photos of older ensembles are allowed - but I strongly encourage everyone to put together a new one also!  :katana:

Oooh how interesting! I have just the thing in mind - I'd put it together a few months ago, but have yet to wear it. I'll wear it and take pics tomorrow morning!

LOL I'm all over this.

My most recent ensemble is here:  http://www.immortalgeisha.com/ig_bb/viewtopic.php?t=11768

I have a crapload of red and white stuff though so will have to put together some more outfits.  I have a cute red wool komon that I was thinking of wearing but just recalled that it's a hitoe so it's a bit late...hm.  Maybe I'll wear it anyways just for fun.

The blasted kimono that got me into this infernal hobby to begin with is red and white... I've only work it once (and not well at that!) so I think I may have to drum up a new outfit with it.. Can we toss in gold as well? There's a lot of gold going on in the obi I've got in mind, and I'm waiting for some red, black, and gold zori.

I just updated the main post with the theme guidelines:

- Outfit must be predominately black, white and red.
- Metallic accents are allowed.
- Small touches of other colours are allowed, providing they are not dominate in the outfit.

So gold in the obi is fine - just as long as your outfit follows the black, white & red rule  :)

I actually have an outfit in mind for this one...but all of my kimono stuff (literally) is back in Canada. I plan on bringing down a piece or two, but my closet here (and suitcases) won't allow it.... so I'll have to try and remember this thread for December, when I'll have time to wear it.

My kimono closet just isn't that versatile (for lack of pieces)!

Awesome, thank you :D Gold is definitely an accent, red is the most predominant with lots of white and the whole base of the obi is black.

Onanako, I  :drooldrool: your dounuki-hikizuri :)

I hurried home after work and dressed quickly to be able to take the pictures before it got dark but I didn't quite make it and had to take the pics with a flash. It gets dark so soon now!

This thread was a good excuse for me to wear my Taisho kurotomesode. It looks discolored in the photos but it's not, it's just the flash. Actually the seller's photos looked like it too but even I thought there's discoloration all over I still got it. Maybe the other bidders thought so too so I got it practically for free  :smil3: It's very small so no ohashori this time. I'm not going to wear this out of the house anyway :)

Chidori, though I love the blue color it'd be interesting to see your ensemble with an different obiage-obijime-combo. Pics? :)

What's Black, White and Red All Over - Some pics from session called "what would be the best obi and accessories for kikyo's kimono", . Coordinated by xiner, when she helped me to choose the best matching obi and accessories. Kanzashi made by me.

Here are the results. Detail:

Thank you , Sarcasm-hime, everybody.  :)

American_Dresser, we didn't have a kimono meet, I just asked xiner to help me to choose colors suited to that kimono and especially obi. Obi in pictures is xiner's, so are tabi and obiage. She has amazing collection of accessories as well as kimono!

Like an idiot I didn't bring my kimono and accessories with me to Japan so that's it for my obiage and jime right now. Guess I'll just have to buy more.... What a chore!

Eh, nearly a week late, but I've finally got round to putting on one of my red, black and white ensembles and taking pictures!

The kimono may look gray, but it's actually black and white stripes. Very fine stripes. Please ignore the stupid face. It's not a good picture day for me.
Image
I'm wearing two obijime!
Image
Image
An upclose picture of the kimono. Sorry for the bad pic! And ignore the badly tied obiage :P
Image
I added a cape on top for extra-cold autumn nights  :]  It was a random purchase in Japan 4 years ago. I never wore it till this January when I realised that it looked cute with kimono. I don't like this picture, though. I think it looks cuter in real life!   :smil3:
Image
The kimono is polyester, and I had a bit of trouble arranging it right (ignoring the creases and the too-long ohashori!), but I suppose it turned out alright. The obi was also too short so my tesaki fold at the back wasn't long enough for the whole otaiko and the top of my otaiko was a little lumpy. It was also a really warm and sunny day today, so I was melting into a puddle of goo! I tore off the ensemble as soon as I could haha.

Please give thoughts on my using 2 obijime!! I was looking through a magazine with a friend last night when we both noticed that one of the models was wearing two obijime, so she suggested that I do that and this is the result. Any suggestions? Should I have added an obidome in the middle or is it alright just as it is?

Onanako> OMG I LOVE that pic with the guitar!! :D:D:D

xiner> That kimono is gorgeous!!

kikyo> How cute!  :kawaii:  :kawaii:  That obiage-bow is reaaaally adorable!

Love the whole outfit! I especially like the hat. You have a really cute collection of hats.  :lovelove  Although I'm not so fond of the cape with that particular hat...I think it would be better served with no hat, or a headband, or maybe even some ear muffs! ;)
I like the two obijime! The way you've tied them is very contemporary. I like the way it's arranged, with the yellow ends crossing over the white maple leaf on the front of your obi.

Awesome!  So far everyone has really great and unique variations on the "What's Black, White and Red All Over theme"!

Here are my outfits - I surprised myself with having two full outfits I could do.

Onanako, love the shot with the guitar. Is that a ro or sha kimono? What's the ukiyo-e painting behind you? Is it an original or a copy? I have a feeling I've seen one like it before, but...

Xiner, your kitskue is just so perfect. I love your smile in the second photo. Is that a shibori obiage you are wearing? And the red backdrop curtain, did you hang that sepcial for the photo or are you out and about somewhere?

Kikyo, I wondered how that kimono turned out, very nicely indeed. Love the obiage tied as a bow, will have to remember that idea.

Shira, you are just SO ADORABLE! Like the hat, but it strikes me too that both the hat and the cape are a bit too much together, but perhaps it is cold in London now?

IG, perfection as always. I especially like the summer ensemble. Your new hair style is great, so becoming. Is it a representation of your new married status?

And, everybody, did you get dressed just for this thread? All dressed up with now where to go? Or, did you then go out somewhere to show off? If so, please do tell where you wore your outfit.

Oh, and Bebemochi, don't you have a stunning black and white kimono you wore shopping with IG, or am I remembering wrong?

Naomi, especially love the second outfit. That black and red striped kimono is just achingly chic.
Also, I really like the han eri and the shigoki obi in the first outfit. They lend a nice feminine touch to what otherwise is a very modern, geometric sort of outfit.

IG always makes me jealous with her impeccable awesomeness.  I clearly need more cute han-eri. :P

Here's my second contribution; it's not strictly conforming to the challenge as I'd done a B-W-R ensemble just recently and really wanted to try out a bold pop of contrast (very daring for me) with the blue.  I'm still deciding how I feel about it as it's goes so much against my instincts.

I was at tea again; you can sort of see the extremely posh hotel tearoom in the background. Of course the kimono looked nicer in person, but flash photography will do that.  :sigh

I really love this kimono; it was brand new (still had the basting threads) and I'm a sucker for batik.

Image

Image

Image

I still have not learned the secret of looking graceful and elegant in kimono photos from behind; always end up looking weird and stumpy.

The obi is the first obi I ever bought, many years ago; it was super cheap and it's a little grungy but I decided I needed to give it another chance (plus I don't have another white casual obi).  I wanted to try a funky musubi but the tesaki is completely plain and ugly so it's really only suited for taiko.

Any idea what the different flowers on it are?  I haven't really paid attention to season in my kimono purchases and am now discovering that some ensembles I'd been envisioning won't work at all due to seasonal conflicts.  :(

Ooh, a friend took a pic with his iPhone and the colours turned out much better:

I decided I would get a little imaginative with my musubi :smil3:.

Although, it could be said that I've already participated in this challenge, with this ensemble.

More ideas soon to come.

Aki_fox> Thanks! :D

bebemochi> Thanks for pointing it out!! It sort of does look wrong with the hat, doesn't it? It looked better on the hanger to be honest    Come to think of it, my Disneyland earmuffs will look insanely adorable with this cape.. They're white and fluffy and in the shape of Mickey's head (the 3 circles) and has a cute red Christmas hat on them!! :P  :lovelove

Naomi-san>  :drooldrool:  :drooldrool:  :drooldrool:  Both your outfits are TEH LOVE!!!!!

Auberginefleur> Thanks  :kawaii:  I was actually planning on only wearing the hat and cape if the weather was too cold, like that one night when the temperature dropped to 6C. Unfortunately, the one day I was free enough to wear this ensemble (I was just putting it on to practice kitsuke in one of my breaks while writing my dissertation) it was really hot, like a nice summer's day! I put it on, took pictures, and tore it off all within the span of 45mins    Which kind of explains the messy kitsuke and bad pictures, really..

Sarcasm-hime> Oooh that looks great!! You know, I was never a big fan of bright shades of red and/or blue together (shudders in memory of school uniform) but after seeing so many great ensembles like yours, I may convert!

Fuyou> That kimono and that musubi are SOOOOO CUUUUUUUUTE!!!!  :D  :D  :kawaii:  :smil3:

I really like this thread, so many awesome ensembles!

shira, I love the way you combine hats and kitsuke :)

Naomi, beautiful ensembles, stripes....  :drooldrool:
I especially like the summer ensemble with shigoki obi and the asymmetrical taiko bow. So chic!

Auberginefleur, thanks :) My obiage is shibori and the red fabric is my curtain. My flat was so messy that it was about the only place I could think of for taking photos. Making excuses again, I postponed the cleaning because I had some kitsuke to do  :D

Sarcasm-hime, your ensemble is really cute! I want that obiage :)

Fuyou, your new purchases are awesome! But I still love the picture of you with the shamisen the most, you look so beautiful in it  :smil3:

Intscher, beautiful ensembles! The red michiyuki is gorgeous.

Yep!  It also was really good at hiding the fact that my obi was tied too loosely and kept showing my datejime on top.  The material of that obi is really corse, so I can't get it to knot very tightly on my own.  So, a nice, wide strip of cloth hid the problems nicely.

It's by Utamaro Kitagawa. It could easily be a reprint. I however do not see a reprint label by who or nothing, It looks authentic enough. It has a few old paper stains along the bottom. I got in a random store.

my other 2 I know are reprints, I bought at a friends of the library sale. for $8 a pop. But beautiful none the less.

it's a sha kimono bee dee dub!

I'm going to have to try that, assuming I have a hanhaba that goes nicely with any of my other obi. :P

I need more places/events to get dressed up for; I can't be bothered to get all gussied up and then sit around the house. LOL

Today is rainy and gloomy, time for challenges!!!

I had tried preconstructed otaiko that goes fairly well...

But I still can´t look on my back and my sister don´t help me.

Auberginefleur - I didn't go out anywhere - I dressed specifically for the challenge :)

Ictscher - All ensembles are great!  Your sister looks wonderful in kimono - is that the first time she's worn it?

Sarcasim Hime - Wow!  Fantastic kimono!  Check out that pattern!  I'm totally digging your blue shibori obiage....wish I had one like that!

Fuyou - great idea with the hanhaba!

Loreamar Lovely ensemble!  It's really great to see how everyone interprets the challenge differently.  Our obi are almost kinda twinsies!

Ictscher, your all red ensemble = :lovelove.  I didn't even realize that last one was your sister instead of you !

loreamar, cute ensemble!  I like how you used a white based kimono.  I've been wanting to do a new black, white, and red ensemble like that.

Immortal Geisha - I´m in love with your summer ensemble. Our obis are great and on season !!!

Fuyou - Another one!!! With your skills! That will be wonderful.

Sarcasm-hime - Excuses for put on kimono: Kimono day, challenges, a bet, birthday, photobook -I will like make one-, just for try because if not can be out season, lost weight! I can put on that smaller one!, silk goes well in winter can be cheaper on heating expenses...,everybody goes with sari in my neighborhood, dominó in kimono?, por que sí, etc, etc, etc.

Shira - Your ensembles are so fresh...so iki.

I think I'll be wearing this tonight (Halloween!) at a charity screening of Joss Whedon's Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog. And maybe around Hollywood.

Image

Kimono: Vintage red & black yabane (arrow feather) chirimen awase, lined in pink chirimen and red habutae. From a Texuba sale two or three years ago - I hesitated to buy it 'cuz it's really short, even for me.
Obi: Red & white hakata nagoya obi, also from Texuba.
Pink obi-age & himo to match the lining.

Sorry for the wrinkles and bad lighting (shhh - taking pictures in the bathroom!)    ::witch

Love the red & black yabane, claw789!! I probably would have bought it, too, even at too short.

Did you end up wearing that outfit?

I had my kuromontsuki on for the New Year's challenge and I figured with a bit of restyling I'd have great opportunity to wear some items I'd never worn before. The haori is quite old but I've never worn it, the obi, obiage, and obijime were bought to go with a grey kimono that turned out to be purple and have not seen much love, sadly. I was glad to bust them out and have fun with them all. :D

Image

Image

Edit: I meant to add these earlier. They were originally for the "mum's the word" challenge, but Naomi suggested I post them here too!

This was my first kimono ever, and I only wore it briefly once, years ago. It made me really happy and nostalgic to put it back on.  :lovelove

I look like a doof in this picture but I wanted to show off how well the zori coordinate. And FIT! FOMG!

Thanks ^.^

It's a tsuke-obi ;) But I love it nonetheless. The black flowers are flocked velvet. I just wish I had a kimono I could wear it with appropriately.

My first contribution to an IG challenge...

The kimono and yukata (used as underlayer) just came together in the mail, and I thought they would be great for this challenge. The obi is self-made from a cotton print with a design of pine and plum and faux shibori. Very wintry, no?

Front view:

Image

Closeup to show the collars (a little blurry):

Back view to show obi and yukata peeking out of the sleeves:

I know this isn't as strictly black/red/white as some of the other gorgeous ensembles above, but it was the best I could do with what I had :coy:

Great job everyone :)

Got dressed today, decided to go looking for something black, white and red. I have a perfect obi for this challenge, but since It's casual kitsuke, I wasn't looking to tie a Nagoya.

So here is my entry for the challenge. I had this outfit in mind for quite some time and this challenge gave me the perfect opportunity to try it.

It's a black komon combined with a red nagoya obi and white obiage/obijime.

Some bamboo for the Japanese feeling.  ;)

With haori.

Posting really late, and stealing from Sarcasm_hime's flickr...

This is the only challenge I can enter because I don't have anything else, really. So here you go!

Image

White-based meisen with black and red design, worn over a black turtleneck. I'm wearing black poly hakama (figured it was best with the weather the way it was), and I had a black haori which isn't in the photos. Big boots to battle the winter with (and I don't have any cute Victorian looking ones). To balance out the otokopoi-ness, I wore it with my new pearls.

Pardon the soggy-looking hair and red face. It's like a sauna when you have hot pot!

Yet another entry from me ^^;;;

I was going to do the Stripes challenge, but I couldn't come up with a satisfactory ensemble with the first kimono I'd chosen for the challenge, so I put together another outfit instead. It's vaguely stripe-y but not enough to enter that challenge yet haha.

This ensemble was one of those no-need-to-think types haha. It's really similar to my first one >.o

Even the juban is red and white! XD I just love the all-over false shibori pattern <3

Another contribution from me. I loves me some black and red ;P

Image

Image

Black and white striped wool komon with red accents, red obi and haori, and apple-green obijime, obiage, and date-eri. The date-eri was my dad's idea, of all people. I know it's technically too formal for the outfit but I'm wearing shibori obiage, opera gloves and boots so I wasn't exactly going for "proper" with this outfit. ;P

xposted to the "Yipes! Stripes!" challenge. ;P

I didn't get as many pictures of this as I would like... I was fiddling with the obi when I got a text from the bf saying "I'll be on the train-station in 10 min. Meet you there."
So I slapdashed the obi on (really horrible) and took some quick pictures before throwing myself out of my kimono-world and back into the world of jeans and shirts.

Tsukesage is from Yamatoku. One of the sleeves is all graduated black like the front panel, but I didn't get around to show it.
Haori I got from Ichiroya (love those guys so much), black with dark red phoenixes.
And the obi is the first obi I got... it's a hanhaba obi, but I feel it's very "nice", so I didn't feel quite so bad for pairing it with this kimono... and I did tie it in tsunadoshi style. ^^;

Thank you both. ^^

I love the kimono and haori very much myself... the kimono makes me feel all lady-like (even if I don't look it there. Didn't have time to do make-up + hair).

I loved the haori at first sight because it made me think of the clan-mon for the Phoenix clan in Legend of the Five Rings (an RPG I love alot and is heavily involved in). So that alone was "omg! must have!" for me. :coy:

That looks like it'd be nice and warm (the checks remind me of flannel). And no worries, at least it's non-puffy and straight! (the ohashori)

Oh aye, that's a nice thing about wool, it breaths/captures whatever temp's close, and sticks to itself (now that I think about it, I know why too, thanks Animal Science 250; Animal Products!), so nice flat ohashori arn't a struggle. My wool juban was also soooo worth it.
