I recently realized I do not have one of those lovely collars a Maiko uses. =D You know the thick ones that show their rank? :coy: I do not know if they have a special name. If anyone can let me know where I can purchase one I would be very greatful. Also if I posted this in the wrong place please move it. Any and all help would be greatly appreciated. :]

They are called han'eri. Mineko IWASAKI wrote in her book that each of hers cost over 2000$, new, in the 60's. A set of 6 used ones recently sold on YJA for over 171 000Y.

I had no idea what that auction went for; over $1000, wow. But not entirely unexpected.

Flickr?

Basically, a very colourful eri is seldom seen apart from misedashi.
Then the maiko wears a red-based eri with white or slightly coloured emboidery, allowing for the red base to show.
After their 3rd year, the red base cloth remains, but is entirely covered by white embroidery, so it looks white from the front but the red shows at the back.
During sakkô, some, but not all, maiko change their senior maiko eri to a pure red one with specks of gold.
Geiko wear a white-based, white-embroidered eri.

This applies to Kyoto, I thin I remember a picture of a Shimbashi geisha with a pink based one, which is never seen in Kyoto apart from bad maiko henshin.

Perhaps now would be a good time to learn embrodery and get a really good pic to work from. It sounds like it may take just as long as saving for the real thing.

We won't remove it. We only remove links where someone is advertising their own item for sale outside of the appropriate channels. People link to eBay all the time.

I assume it's this one.

Please take a look at the measurements before you buy that juban. It looks child size to me - which means the collar will be too short to use for a maiko henshin. I know this because I bought a child's juban with a red collar for my daughter and she told me that the collar was too short...

Just a warning American Taikomochi, I believe that juban is actually for a little girl - at least that's what the proportions make me think.

Here's a suggestion for making your own han'eri though; you can buy red obi or uchikake scraps and then fold them to the right width and stitch them to the juban collar. It doesn't require a lot of sewing skill either.

Thank you GoldenPhoenix for that advise! Do you know a way I could make a collar that ties like a maiko collar?

The last five are called "ofuku" (おふく) because these are the last collars maiko will wear before becoming a full fledged geisha, along with the ofuku hair before her erikae. Like Kotoha's photo here
Image
The others are called shinobu (しのぶ) as you will notice they have much more red on them depending on how "junior" she is. Hope that helps a little (if I didnt get something right feel free to correct me :P )
Thats what I believe is at least most of them. I finally found my own but it was forever ago on this random site...I wish I would have kept the sites name now

That is some crazy embroidery. Thank you for posting the pictures! Seeing those, it sort of makes more sense why the collars are so expensive.

Yea, I just bought one of my own and with all the fees it has come to about 500. Im not sure if mine has been worn or not, and Im not even sure if this is a good price, but I have only seen 3 other people (outside of japan) with them so I had to get it... :sigh
I wish I knew how they made them. It would be such an interesting process

Thankyou for compiling that list 花魁の美 it would be great to have a real maiko han eri but i can't justify spending 500 on one, so i guess I'll be embroidering my own

I hesitated for a brief moment until I realized how rare they are when theyre not on maiko :pout: I figured I would never get the same chance if one ever did come back up for buying outright for that much. Normally theyre on auction and sell really high.

So, I noticed that maiko han' eri have this little white fabric on the back of them and Im assuming this is to help it keep its shape. Mine still has folds where you can tell it was folded almost in half in the center and only the little red ends were folded in next the embroidery to keep its stiff, crisp look. What can I do to achieve this, would a simple white piece of cloth basted on work or is it a special kind of material? I really really dont want to sew or alter anything on it and probably would never have the guts to , so what can I do to make the collar hold its shape :ohno:
Image
Its blurry but the white strip is what Im talking about :(

The han eri is stitched to a more elaborate and longer version of an easy collar.

Shown over a piece of cardboard.

Thank you. I suppose I should have known this but for some reason I thought it was something else stuck to the back of it. Are there longer easy collars that can be purchased for this sort of thing or are they all just a basic size?

Question about that maiko obiage site- do you physically have to visit the store to purchase or do they sell online as well? because it would seem that they have lots of maiko/dance accessories up that are decent prices =D

Lol! Yeah, but its their job to do that for you, i would think that if you buy enough stuff from them frequently/occasionally then they'd be pleased that you are continuing to use their business and do what you want to keep you using their service

The obiage came from that nifty site you found on Ikuokaya and suihu (once again) is deciding to wait 2 weeks before they reply :sigh

I know right?! Sometimes I wish this stuff were easier to find or at least cheaper because I hate the feeling of having something RIGHT in FRONT of my face and not being able to have it. Its soo...aggravating and depressing sometimes :pout: After seeing all the people that are looing for this stuff I search online when Im bored, and over the course of two years or so I have browsed at least 2000+ sites and its like the world says "nope, not today"

I haven't seen this asked ever but how big are maiko's han eri exactly? I'm going to buy red cloth and embroider one myself as they're too expensive for me to buy.

the first one is only half of a regular maiko han-eri - the measurements read 44cm in length and 16cm in width

Possible maiko han eri? Its measurements are 16 cm x 111cm.
Im thinking about getting one regardless because theyve got two that seem real and both of them are ro :drooldrool: Plus I miss my other one and I cant embroider for my life to make oneXD

Now this is a gorgeous one!

By the way, I've always wondered how your name is supposed to be pronunced. I can embroider (though not like that!) but cannot read Japanese.

Its Oiran No Bi :) I learned japanese from my friend who lives in Miyagi^^
Personally I have always wanted to embroider but unfortunately Im too impatient and could never be that good. So my hat goes off to those who can, especially the people who do actually embroider the collars :lovelove

Wow, I don't think I've seen wisteria used as an han'eri motif for maiko much, if at all, nice find :)

Are the last five really called "ofuku"?
Isn´t the hair called sakkou before her erikae?

The picture is of sakkô, but the white all-covering embroidery is worn as soon as a maiko switches to ofuku. Apart from the gold-speckled red eri some maiko wear, the one worn during sakkô is the same as the one worn with ofuku.

At least if I dont win I have the comfort of knowing she goes to a good home so its its all in good nature. I dont like losing something and never seeing it again or not knowing where it goes :(
Best of luck and let the bidding begin  :katana:

If anybody wants this one, PM me soon. I "bought" it on ichiroya, thinking maybe someone from here would love to have it.

I feel bad for IG members who miss great stuff from ichiroya because of time differences/scheduling conflicts. So I thought I would try "saving" it until you guys had a chance to see it.

I'll be cancelling my order sometime within the next 6 hours if it is "unclaimed". After that, you can look for it to be "unsold" on the ichiroya website.
