Kiku are usually pointed petals, though I've seen maiko with round-petal ones. Ume are made with 5 round petals, sometimes doubled-up. Sakura can be made in several ways, either by pinching a round petal or glueing two pointed ones together.
Nicky Chan: I can only highly recommend Meander's kanzashi making tutorial on YouTube. She shows how to make the regular petals, the rounded petals and the pointed petals. I don't know about the sakura though maybe Deviant art?
Hope this helps. There are other links in this thread elsewhere which are also really good. Just keep practicing and don't get discouraged. Maybe experiment with ordinary fabric that's been heavily starched before trying silk.
thanks a lot! silk is too expensive here! so i use cotton or other cheaper fabrics, but as soon as i get more experienced ill get a little silk and see if it works better XD
thanks! btw... double petals are simple poking in one petal into another?
Not quite... you can do that also to get a layered blossom, as these:
To get double petals, you have to take two squares, fold the first in half, keep it, fold the second square in half, superpose the triangles, and finish your petal with both at the same time (for a round petal. You need to assemble the triangles after the second fold for the pointed ones.) The image above does have double petals in addition to being layered, by the way.
Here is an example of double petals made with two different fabrics:
I call these "double petals" and "layered petals," but the denomination has nothing official or set in stone. I simply hope you found out what you wanted!
sumimasen! your explanation is surely great, but unfortunately, im a visual person and i need to see pctures of the process XDD i get lost with the triangles!!
thank you so much eitherways for talking a little time to answer my post!
Tahanala-san: The photos are very beautiful but I second what Nicky chan says. Is there a tutorial for these type of double petals double layered? Ookini. I have not started making Tsunami Kanzashi yet, but I have started to make the bira bira again, small ones like I usually make, only now I have to kind of stop as the holidays are coming up very rapidly!

you make bira bira! how nice! congratulations!
i posted a thread about bira bira.. because all my attempts FAILED... heheh... mind giving it a look? ookini!
I agree with Yanagi-san, I think they are round petals with a slit or piece cut out of the tips. I think if you used fray block or glue or something similar it might keep the fabric from fraying. When I first looked at this kanzashi I thought it was real flowers! Wow so beautiful too!
habutae silk on ebay: 1188mall goodtakecare twinsmoore I suppose all of those three are the same shop, but under different names... I bought few times from them and never had a problem with colour or any flaws of the fabric. The silk is really light and when starched- perfect to cut and shape petals. It isn't too expensive too
As of starching the silk- I'm making the simplest potato flour starch which is used through the generations in my family XD So basically I'm mixing 1 table spoon of starch with half glass of cold water and boiling 1-1.5l of water, then I add the mixture and stir. Et voila! You can put the silk after it'll loose some of it's hotness
Another good thing is to have two pair of tweezers- it's the best idea when everything start to be sticky out of the rice glue- you don't have to run and clean them every five seconds. And an apron- you can always get rid of the glue out of your hands quickly and your clothes are clean
Tell me about it... when I asked in the stores around my idea- they were like- "REAL silk?" and one lady told me something about silk scarves for painting for $40 D:
