This one is going to be a sort of group challenge. To show our hope and solidarity for Japan in this time of devastation, I'd like to see if collectively we can "wear" one thousand paper cranes. Get together your best and brightest outfit featuring orizuru. If you're feeling really productive, count how many cranes are on the outfit and post here. Let's see if we can make it to one thousand!

I've got an outfit planned for this but currently half of it is in a box at Naomi's house ;P As soon as I get it in the mail, I will post it.

This is a great idea! What about those of us who don't have paper crane kimono... would a normal crane count?

I'd really prefer to keep this as paper cranes specifically, since they are what the tradition is about. Regular cranes can go in the Bird is the Word challenge.

My partner works for Nissan (in the UK) and they made cranes for the reception (they ended up making over 2,000), but it looks amazing. :]

Aww, that's sweet.

I think if anyone actually has a senbazuru - either one they made or one they received as a gift - it would be nice if they could post it here.

This is a great idea for a challenge.

My paper crane kimono is, sadly, too small - I might have to do some creative fake kitsuke photo.

I really wanted to participate in this - but then I realized I had no :ori: in my collection whatsoever.

So uh, I went to YJA....and guess what? I now have a kimono with :ori: on it! Of course, I need to wait for it to be shipped here...but once it is - I'll dress and join in!

And just because I can: :ori:

Orizuru obi and haori!

Image

There are 52 orizuru on the obi and 27 on the haori (inside included), for a total of 79.

This past weekend I went to Japan Day Fundraiser in Norwich, and figured it was a perfect opportunity to wear my favorite komon that has LOTS of paper cranes. :blonde:

Image

Before wearing it, I counted them all... I'm sure I'm off somewhat, but I'm NOT re-counting lol. There was also some fabric sewed in, and I didn't count those, so potentially there are more cranes than I counted. And I also found out that I have a paper cranes on one of my koshihimo, so I used it too.

Kimono: 460 Koshihimo: 183 Total: 643

Total with moonblossom's: 722 :katana:

Sure are! I collect those dolls on kimono stuff (paper cranes just happened to be on this kimono as well lol) they look like origami kimono dolls but I don't know the proper name for them

Ane-sama ningyo :) (means "elder sister dolls", because the tradition says elder sister made them for their younger sisters)

Lyuba you are too cute for words!

Too bad my crane komono is just cranes and not paper ones! They would add a huge amount to the count!

HMM!!! I love paper cranes! I have an oritsuru obi and komon (which is probably too small, haven't tried it out yet...). I'll try to try out an ensemble or two of those. :)

Are there any photos of Geiko/Maiko wearing Oritsuru paper crane kimono? (I would love to see a link or to be pointed in the right direction.) Also, what significance would there be to a geiko/maiko wearing an oritsuru kimono, for example would it be suitable for a special sort of occasion or season? Thank you!!!

I have seen maiko wearing them, here's a photo of a great orizuru darari obi.

As for significance, they are auspicious but I don't think they have a specific seasonality to them, even for maiko.

Aww man, I don't have any paper crane motifed stuffs. :ohno:

We used to make 1,000 of them every year in primary school and send them to Hiroshima & Nagasaki. I have always thought of making kanzashi with cranes...
