Let's Party Like It's 1933 - Iromuji with dounuki or layers!
IG Kitsuke Challenge guidelines:
http://www.immortalgeisha.com/ig_bb/vie ... hp?t=11787
According to March 1933 issue of Shofu no Tomo - the fashion for the year was wearing dounuki with crested iromuji.
Let's work on bringing that fashion back! Drag out your iromuji (or use this as an excuse to finally buy one ;) ) and find a rather snazzy layer to wear underneath.
Don't have a dounuki? No problem! Just grab another kimono to use instead!
Don't know how to wear dounuki / layers? Never fear! Remember, dounuki are worn the same as kimono. When you dress - hold the two layers together as though they were one and dress as per usual. Just be sure to leave around a 1/4 inch sliver around the collar and down the left hand side - you know how a kasane eri looks, right? Just like that - but all the way down the left hand side so we can -just- see that layer!
Do you want to be daring and wear multiple layers? We're not stopping you! Just make sure your topmost kimono is an iromuji!

i dont know if this counts but it's the closet to a iromuji i have. It's an old, VERY old supposively a geisha kimono, ITs VERY heavy and VERY long.in this photo i have a rather big ohashori entirely covered but a lil bit. So much fabric I barely managed.
also i have 2 donuki's, but there was so much happening I couldnt put them on with =/
MY non padded, regular donuki

I might actually be able to participate in this one!
I just need to finish the lining in one sleeve and my iromuji will be finished!
Now to decide what to wear under it...

I'm really looking forward to participating in this one. I just have to tack up the sleeves of my dounuki first though - as they are about twice the length of my iromuji (or, should I just get an iromuji with long sleeves? Harder to find....but rawr!)

Hummm... this is very inspiring and I do own an iromuji but I don't think I have anything snazzy to wear underneath unfortunately.... :(
I hope new pics will be posted here soon :]

For people who don't have an iromuji, maybe you could try an irotomesode and some creative photo cropping? Not sure if that's allowed, but if you stopped at the knees you'd get a similar visual effect.

I dont' have an iromuji- I've bid on several blue ones, but the price always goes up higher than I'd like. I do like moonblossom's idea of using an iro- tomesode and cropping the design out, though. I do have one that might work for that

This really was a challenge! I've never tried layered kitsuke before and found out it's not that easy to do. It's literally three times more collar problems and not to mention how hot and heavy it is But after I managed to get dressed I have to say it was quite comfortable.
I'm wearing my pink peony tsukesage underneath. It has a kasane eri attached. I'm not so sure about the color combo but the tsukesage was the same size as my iromuji.
Pics taken at the rooftop of our house. This landscape probably hasn't changed much after 1933

Gah, I am itching to get all my packages delivered - I've got ideas in mind for several of these challenges but they all rely on things I don't have yet :angerburst

I completely agree! The second pic is specially gorgeous. What I like the most is the very noticeable vintage feeling: the lipstick, the black embroidered collar, the blue obiage & obijime set (I've seen this exact shade of colour at "Showa Modern Kimono" drawings!)

that's such a beautiful iromuji! I've been wanting a blue or red one, but it's so hard to find just the right shade on the internet. It is really nice to have a good photographer! I'd like to say that my husband is...but he's not. I have to travel to get to mine
I love the treasure obi, also. It's a lovely combination; the blue touches are really nice!

Auberginefleur, I'm glad to hear you think this shade of pink suits me. I wasn't so sure about it at first. Thanks
Songbird, you're right about finding a right shade of red kimono on the internet, you can never be sure what you get until you open the package. Maybe that's the reason I didn't quite like this kimono at first when I got it. I had thought the shade was much lighter! BTW this was one of my first obijime ever but I couldn't figure out what to do with it until now

I tried! The obi's season is very very wrong and my kitsuke is not great, but I had fun coordinating the layers and accessories. My iromuji is far too small for this to work properly, I'm afraid. I tried to get something resembling an ohashori going, but it just refused to cooperate. You can see in a few of them how much longer my tsukesage/komon/mystery kimono is. But I love the colours together so much I thought I'd show you guys anyways. :katana:
You can see a few more shots and larger versions on my flickr account
Hope I did okay!

moonblossom - I think that shade of green is beautiful on you!! Especially with the background leaves. I also really like the obi and accessories you've used; it looks like your layer kimono matches well with the obijime.

 you all look so pretty!
I can't wait for Daddy to get here with my stuffs.. he's bringing my iromuji to finish up and a couple of books on making kimono.. I found some gorgeous fabric at Wallmart just the other day that will look awesome as kimono.. one is beige with a kind of retro pattern (thin/medium cotton) and the other is a funky plaid (black with dark gray, red and white stripes all going at a weird angle so it makes diamonds instead of squares) (medium/thick synthetic/cotton blend.. very warm and soft <3 ) and best of all, they are brand new bolts AND were on the clearance rack! 15 yards of the plaid for $1/yd and 20 yards of the beige for $2/yd... I think I'm also going to make a haori with the beige and a few other things... :angerburst <too many ideas
Unfortunately, I will have to wait until I get home before getting any pictures.. all of my kitsuke stuff is there and I really didn't want to torture Daddy by asking him to find it all for me... besides, it will probably take me all week to make/finish my new kimono.. I hope I can get them done before I go home next weekend...
erm.. sorry for going off topic like that

Thank you very much, kofoss! I love that iromuji, even if it doesn't fit too well.
The obijime matches a kasane-eri I've got attached to the underlayer kimono. That was a total fluke, I bought a bundle of scrap fabric at Wal-mart for something unrelated, and found this strip of wine-coloured silk that was exactly the right size for a kasane-eri and matched one of my jime -exactly-. I was so pleasantly surprised.

I love the look, but I'm not comfortable with the bulk, personally ><'' Maybe if I had a larger kimono as the top layer.
I might layer several kasane-eri though, I do like the idea of that.

I actually was the one who sold you that susohiki. I'm really happy it went to a good home from the forums I always hoped I would find one of my old kimono lingering around the forums. You look lovely in it :)

well.. this is my first attempt at an IG challenge, so please be mercifull.
The victims of my attempt are a tsukesage as dounuki and my quasi pink iromuji, completed with my bingata nagoya obi which I love very much.
I was also thinking maybe to add this to the single color challenge aswell...
enjoy.. I think
P.S. I forgot to put on my tabi before putting on the kimono, so don't mind the brown/dark green socks   :D and in the last pic.. I rushed for the pose and forgot to drop the zori

thank you moonblossom.
ETA: Happy Birthday dear
I bought that obi from YJA and it felt like an eternity waiting for it to arrive
one thing I wasn't sure about was the collar. I think the dounuki was supposed to look like a kasane eri, but with all my efforts I couldn't make them look even, so I ended up tying them separately.
loreamar thank you I've added the pics to the single challenge aswell

the iromuji has a strange pink shade that changes to almost ocre-yellow at different lighting.

I've been meaning to try this challenge out for a while, but I just never got around to it. But now that I'm going to be leaving back to Japan soon, I want to try out all of the challenges before I no longer have access to my collection. So, here's the first of my iromuji entries. I didn't really have any problems with the collars and ohashori, but my hems were a nightmare. My obi was giving me a little trouble, too. I didn't judge the length of the short end correctly, and I had too much of the long end to deal with. Things to work on next time... I thought the color combo was nice, but next time I think I'll add a date-eri to give it more pop. The tsukesage I wore underneath. Sorry the pic is blurry. I'll have more entries soon.

Thanks, clockwork faerie. I was actually pretty worried with that shade, since oranges normally don't look good on me.
Ame, I love the color combo, and the homongi you paired with it. That third picture is great.

Hello everyone, at last I can participate in challenges ^v^ And yes, this is a double kill with both doonuki style with iromuji and single colour coordination :D I fought with the double kimono ohashori but it wasn't until getting finished and taking loads of photos until I remembered I could have gone with normal layers as well... Ah what the heck. Had fun ^v^

There has been no keiko this Sunday, so I dressed up for this challenge! I'm wearing a green tsukesage underneath. You can see a picture of it here. No, this is not a flower sticking out of my head. My husband was angry with the computer not working properly and he was hardly paying attention to the quality of the photos he was taking (I am grateful that he took them at all, being tired from fighting with the "stand by" option not working at all). A view from the side: A peep underneath: A view from behind: Details for those interested, going from head to toe ;) coral kanzashicollars I'm especially proud of these! obiage arealower panel motif detailThere are so many beautiful ensembles in this thread - I hope you will like this one, too!

Hmm... I don't own an iromuji but an Edo komon is close enough right? I had the darndest time getting those layers to stay put and my ohashiori... My "dounuki" is a dance hitoe and kept slipping around on me and I just couldn't get get ohashiori to lay flat! I just love these colors together (although I'm not sure if it would have been a combo they'd choose in 1933 ).

Japanese clothing used to be made of several layers (Search "juni hitoe", for instance.) Then the number of layers gradually started to diminish, while the garment form became what is now called a "kimono." Up to WWII, it was customary to wear 2 or 3 layers of what is now the only, upper kimono; these under-layers of kimono were called dônuki. They were still in use in 1933, and it seems the fashion of the year was to have an iromuji as upper layer, thus the objective of this challenge to be inspired by this look.
Even nowadays, the ceremonial kurotomesode often have an extra inner skirt part called hiyoku, and the aspect of having another layer can be created with additional collars called date-eri. The search function and Google are your friends, too!

Aethyreal, this is not like 1933, this is much like the Edo period! Just think - Edo komon, Edo murasaki, those tiny hints of red... One can hardly expect a blonde head on top of it. Something with nihongami would be mor obvious Congratulations!

Here's my contribution to the thread! Today, because it was so cold I decided to try adding another layer to make it warmer( Although it didn't work) so I wore my new red iromuji with my yukata under it.

Ooo I rather like that combination, rei. I feel the colors of the yukata match nicely with the color of the iromuji.

Un, this was a co-piece to 'IS IT SPRING YET'. Thanks. Wasn't sure whether to go with purple or pink. Guess pink was the better choice.
