You could try and look for some info in Louis Frederic books. He was a specialist on South East Asia. I know that there is English edition of Daily Life in Japan at the Time of the Samurai. I don't know how many others are available. I have one of his books about Meiji but it's in Polish. However in my book there are descriptions of rural homes how they looked in Edo and how they changeg later on (propably urban houses as well, I don't remember).

Here is what I found on ebay:

It's not always accurate, but if you want to see how a skilled artist portrayed this time period in a manga, check out the interior scenes in "Inuyasha" by Takahashi Rumiko. It's probably not 100% accurate, but it might be a good reference for how to portray the general "look" + where to put shading, lines, etc.

yes, inuyasha is very good.

there are tonnes of samurai drama set in that era aswell, if you just want the visuals then it wouldnt matter if you dont know japanese. How feudal do you want it? Sengoku jidai? before western influence? or is pre meiji restoration ok?
