If you want specifics, you will have to find a Nihon Buyo teacher near you. That's the best way you're going to learn. There might be some books for specific dance schools that are used as study guides for dance students, but they'd probably be in Japanese. Other than that, you might be out of luck. I don't believe there is anyone online that shows the steps to their dances for non-paying students.

I learned both the Gion Kobu version of Gion Kouta (which is up on youtube) and the Miyagawacho version (also on youtube). I learned them from studying the videos, and that's really the only chance you have.

No teacher you find would teach you Gion Kouta if you asked for it. I'm not trying to sound rude but.... if you want to learn nihonbuyo itself, that's different, and you learn what the teacher wants you to learn. If you go up and say "Can you just teach me this one dance?" I highly doubt they'd agree. Also, on the chance that they know the dance, it's going to be danced by whatever school your teacher is part of, and so would probably be different. I've seen non-geiko versions of Gion Kouta and they are REALLY different.

Your best bet is really just to do the videos. It only took me a week or so to learn the Miyagawacho version (with Spring, Summer and Winter, anyway). The Gion Kobu version probably took me two weeks to memorize the moves and now if I want to relearn it, I can do so in a day.

I second the video-learning. But you also have to be careful with that. Don't forget that you need to mirror their actions taking into account the perspective/point of view of the audience and dancer, and watch as many videos as possible with different people dancing so that you can find how they dance it in their own style. It would also help to study the lyrics properly in its original Japanese (and subsequently match the translated words to each Japanese word) so you know when you need to do a certain action and you also know the emotion that needs to be shown in your actions.

I've seen a complete Gion Higashi version on YouTube recently. I don't know if it is different from the Gion Kobu one since the Inoue school was granted exclusivity there long before the Gion hanamachi split, though I think all 4 seasons were danced but the refrain wasn't. Here it is.

(And the most recent video is of Pontochô Chizu and Momifuku, who really looks like a little girl! :lovelove )

thank you so much for all your advices and help :coy:
i've been learning throught this video:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zBeZyr2Cu44

it is made by someone who i've saw on flick and i think she's in IG too.

there are so many versions of the dance, that i've thought on improvise a little with my own feelings and what i feel when listening the music. The lyrics are really important to make the gestures flow with elegance.
Please post here links of Gion Kouta videos, and i will try to take the best from all and make a really wonderful version :kawaii: solo ones(with only one maiko) are more easy to learn, but they are all so beautiful :katana:

*waves* :)

I don't know which you want to learn, but I love the Miyagawa version, and used Miehina's dance to learn it:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FRPRWZLXlI4

To learn the Gion Kobu/Inoue version, i used a video that I'm pretty sure isn't on youtube anymore (I ripped it and saved it to my harddrive before they took it down). But there are so many videos of it still, especially now with KyotoMaikoCH, that you should have no problem finding some good videos.

Well good luck ! =D
I want to learn too, maybe one day I will be really decided... I would prefer to take lessons but that's impossible in my city. :pout:

About Toshiha link:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FRPRWZLXlI4
I have the impression that Fumiyu sings & plays "Gion Kouta" slower than usual. Don't you have this impression too ?

I suppose the other thing about using lots of videos is you can see how the moves should look from different angles.

Ohhh: now I want to try to learn it too; just to see if I can.

I just discovered a new way.

I use AVS Video Converter. And I downloaded a Gion Kouta Video using the you tube link on youddl.com (Or keepvid.com if that dosen't work)

Then using the video converter I load it and then I slecet the whole clip and then flip it. Voila! You can now copy exactly!

It's easy to rip a good-sounding video form youtube and convert it into a music file if you have the right software. I don't know anywhere you can actually buy the song though... not the completely traditional one anyway.

My favorite version of Gion Kouta is the one from Misora Hibari. She has a very strong and tuned voice. The problem is,in her Gion kouta song i can't find the last verse:

Yuki wa shitoshito maru mado ni
Tsumoru ouse no sashimukai
Houkage tsumetaku sayofukete
Moyai makura ni kawa chidori

Does someone know why?

can you give me the complete lyrics, please?
i'm practicing with both Gion Kouta from Misora Hibari(she has that powerful voice :drooldrool: ) and ichimaru. But for the ichimaru version,i need to know the complete lyric so i can dance it correctly.
the only lyric i have is this:

Tsuki wa oboro ni higashiyama
Kasumu youto no kagaribi ni
Yume mo izayou beni zakura

i'm practicing with both Gion Kouta from Misora Hibari(she has that powerful voice :drooldrool: ) and ichimaru. But for the ichimaru version,i need to know the complete lyric so i can dance it correctly.
the only lyric i have is this:

Tsuki wa oboro ni higashiyama
Kasumu youto no kagaribi ni
Yume mo izayou beni zakura
Shinobu omoi wo furisode ni
Gion koishiya darari obi yo

please tell me if this is the full version or it's lacking more verses.

I am pretty sure that's right. Misora's version is powerful. However, there are quite a few breaks in that song which can mess you up. I've tried. I can do Gion Kobu & Miyagawa-cho. I am looking for a full video with he Kamishicken (sp, it's late and my face hurts) version. KyotoMaikoChannel closed their YouTube acct for some reason...

It says Pontochô right in the comments. Ichisayo's kimono is very pretty.

it begins like "mizu no tsuki"

Is it me or are the lyrics different than other versions like Gion Kobu's or Miyagawa-cho's ?

The lyrics are the same in all districts; however, for some performances I have seen/heard it with Autumn cut out from the song, and they only dance to three stances of music. I don't know why they do this, though.

I assume it's because the dance is a bit long and they remove stanzas to shorten the dance, especially to emphasize the season they're in. I've seen a 2-stanza Gion Kouta performed.

I really can't say. I loaded it onto my Walkman video player and I learn it w/o practicing. I took professional lessons for 9 years so it came easy.

OMG I have both geiko and maiko parts now and I've taught my friend to do the maiko part. Once she masters hers, we have plans to do a video. XD

That's awesome, ladyhendrix!
-> I could do the Maiko part, I only learned that one, haha

Where did you fnd a video where a Geiko dances alone? I've always seen Maiko dancing Gion Kouta... or Maiko+Geiko. But I never saw a Geiko ALONE in that dance 8-O

I don't think you'll find one. It has something to do with the lyrics. The last part (the Gion Kobu version has the maiko turns around and holds her sleeves and bends back a bit) has the lyrics "darari no obi yo" and since geiko don't wear darari obi, they can't do those steps of the dance. That's why when it's a geiko x maiko pairing, the maiko has to do all 4 (if they do the complete dance) steps for the "darari no obi yo" instead of alternating as with the maiko x maiko pairing.

They do this:
Image
Gion Kouta by Joi, on Flickr

If it's maiko x maiko, they alternate starting with the maiko on the left (according to the view of the audience) showing their obi first and the maiko on the right (who dances the "geiko" portion, and thus in the picture above, dances in place of the geiko) showing the obi with her hand (as in picture above)

The end of the second (summer) and fourth (winter) part for a maiko x maiko dance would look like this:
Image

But if it's a maiko x geiko dance, it would look like the first picture in all 4 parts.

This is for Gion Kobu, I'm still not fully familiar with all the steps in the other districts but it should be similar, where the maiko shows the darari obi.

I was trying to say if the Geiko does Gion Kouta alone what she would do instead of maiko+geiko :)

As I said, she would not dance Gion Kouta alone because of the interpretation of the lyrics. She cannot dance it alone otherwise the song would be missing an important part, after all the "darari no obi yo" is sung in all verses of the song.

Improvise! :) I usually use my camera to do self portraits by placing it on my dresser, on high piles of books, on my book shelf or wherever I need it... I'm sure you can come up with something :)

I hope I get some time this extended weekend. We're going kimono shopping on Monday so if we have time to spare, we might try to practice.
