Some time ago I purchased a book that Google translates the title as:

"Kimono flowers blossom time - "housewife's friend,"

I was drawn to the book mainly due to all the vintage photographs and illustrations of ensembles from early Taisho through to the late 50/60s. The bulk of the book concentrates largely Taisho/Early Showa era. However, call me strange, the icing on the cake for me with this book was in the back on the black and white pages - scans out of old women's magazines showing kitsuke instructions!

I found these interesting because they felt so much more casual compared to the instructions presented today. I was also surprised and amused to see they did use cheats/tools with obi even in the 20's. Here we are, worried that using tools and cheats makes us inferior in kitsuke, however - it didn't stop them from using them back in the day! :D

I scanned in a few of images to share. They might be blurry, as I had to scan them in from tiny pictures - but I think they give the general idea.

I hope you find this as interesting as I did, and enjoy :)

That looked like I book I ought to have on my bookshelf... so I've ordered it from Amazon.jp - thanks for posting all those scans! Absolutely a must have book for anyone who loves Taisho & Showa era kimono. Can't wait for my copy to arrive now! :D

Since there's a pic showing how to use one of those otaiko gadgets, I may treat myself to one of those too! I've always resisted up till now, partly because I don't know how to use one yet but also because of the idea that somehow I'd be cheating (though it hasn't stopped me using tsuke obi...) It's reassuring to know it's history predates all the modern kitsuke schools.

Oh thanks for posting!!!
I especially like the first drawings, they have this special "diva" feeling of old hollywood films. Great :)

kkk i just ordered it now, too! Thanks for the recommendation! I've been having a hard time coordinating some of the Taisho items I have, so any visual COLOR references are helpful. That and being able to tell what kind of photos a book has, just from it's cover on amazon.co.jp is impossible.

So, thanks again for the reference!!

I´m especially inspired by the hair styles because I´m acutally working on a taisho-period-ensemble. The way of cheating is very interesting, too. I wonder if I´m able to make such an item on my own ...

those are awesome! thanks so much! the hairstyles are really interesting, and I also noticed that they're not using an obi ita-...did anyone else notice that? It makes sense that it would be a modern invention, but it is neat to see it in the pictures.

Agnesia- I love the hairstyles also; I can't wait to see your ensemble :)

That's really interesting - it looks from the pictures like they're adjusting the collars, tying a himo *above* the bust to secure the collars, THEN doing the hip-himo for the ohashori. Am I seeing something that's not there?

Woke this a.m. to find FexEx delivery man at my door with my copy! :D :D :D I must have slipped up in my excitement to order and asked for a quicker delivery service than I normally pay for. ;) BF asked if I was expecting any deliveries as he raced to the door and I said "not for a few days"...!

It is a fabulous book. I have flipped through it and raced to the keyboard with excitement! If you love vintage kimono, this is the book to have - even if you can't read Japanese, many of the dates are in Western calendar years, and for the pictures alone it is worth it. Think of the hundreds of times you have looked at mid Showa or Taisho kimono and wondered what they looked like, what the hairstyles were for 1962 or which haori to wear with that bingata kimono, or ways to get the 1930s look and more trad look out of the same furisode... it is all there. Worth its weight in gold/obidome anyday! :lovelove

Immortal Geisha, this has been one of your top reccomendations! Domo arigato gozaimasu!

My bad - you're right - I didn't spot the ISBN there.

Too busy drooling over the lovely pictures, I'm afraid

(We don't have a slobbering geisha icon, do we?)

Anyway, thanks for kindly spelling it out for me in full - most appreciated!

I didn´t noticed it at the beginning too, so don´t worry :P
But the bad news is that the 2 books they had left when this thread started are sold now and you have to wait 3 till 5 weeks till it can be shipped.....

Um...I made the ISBN number really large and bold earlier this morning, then I had an emergency come up and couldn't post that I did it until now.

So anyone thinking they were crazy in missing it like this, you're perfectly sane.

I'm really glad you liked the book Takenoko It is one of my all time favourites. I even purchased it while I was wearing kimono at the book store, then spent the evening in a charming little Japanese bar in Japantown talking to the owner about it :) She had a particular fondness for Tasho/Showa style because of her grandmother.

I have another book that I've been meaning to take some scans and post about. If you like this book, I think you'll appreciate this other one. I'll try to do that soon.

With such rave reviews and interesting scans, how could I resist? I ordered mine through YesAsia as part of a larger order, although they might take a few weeks to deliver. I'm finding that the more references I have, the more I want! You can never have too much information =D

I completely agree with that statement! Nearly every time I go to Kinokuniya I walk out with a new kitsuke book of some sort. I am very lucky as I have a well stocked small Kinokuniya about 10 minutes from my house and then a large Kinokuniya in Japantown which has an even larger selection of kitsuke books. All this means I have the advantage of flipping through the books before deciding to buy them.

I had planned this weekend to start scanning in a few pages each from my books and doing some mini reviews for you guys. I remember when I lived in Florida and used to buy books blindly from Amazon.co.jp just by the cover....sometimes, I'd receive a real treat - and others, it would be a complete dud - I always wished there was a way to see what was in them before buying.

Thank you for the wonderful review! This really takes me back to all the pictures I seen from my Modern Japan class about kimono. Very inspiring!
