"The New Kimono: From Vintage Style to Everyday Chic"

So I was browsing Amazon to get some holiday shopping done and somehow I ended up looking at kimono books. That's believable right? Like, it's possible my fingers have muscle memory of their own and just chose to type "kimono" and then my pinky slipped and whoops, I accidentally scrolled down... several pages. Slowly. *ahem*

Anyway, I was really excited to find this: The New Kimono.
Image
It's translated articles from Nana-oh! OMG, I love Nana-oh. I've been putting off reviewing my copy of issue 13 because I can't read Japanese, but now I'm all excited that soon I will know what all the tips are about. :coy: <-fangirl

Anyway, it's supposed to be out in May, but we all know how that worked out for Okimono Kimono. But still! More kitsuke books in English! :kitti:

Woohoo! This looks like a good one. I've never read Nana-oh, what are the articles like? Do they do a lot of coordinates, and what kind of styles do they do (kimono hime, modern, old-fashioned orthodox, etc.)?

The style is modern but not hime. I would say that if Kimono-hime is sort of punk, Nana-oh is sort of a preppy look. There tend to be articles with kimono/obi designers and then articles that show how to coordinate more than one outfit with the same kimono by changing the obi and accessories. The one I have, issue 13 has an article on coordinating your juban sleeves with your outfit to express your own style, an article that seems to be about getting spots out of vintage kimono and caring for obijime and tabi, and there even is a bit about cooking flan at the back.

Thanks for sharing this! I can't wait to get a copy.

It sounds like their style is a lot more wearable for everyday than Kimono-Hime would be.

I am determined this summer to change into a kimono or haori-inspired outfit every day when I get home from work. Something light, simple and really lovely, to lift the spirits.

Immortal Geisha, I recently ordered vintage makeup books. I think they have hairstyles too, but I'm so bad with doing anything with my hair that I don't even attempt. But aside from practicing from that book, I think you should also work on your kimono style book ;P *hint hint, wink wink, nudge nudge*

I'm toying with the idea of buying it but I will have to wait after the kitacon.

Immortal Geisha That vintage hairstyle book is on my amazon wishlist as it has some lovely hairstyles which I think would be great for my wedding. Although I think my hair might be a little bit too long for some of the styles.

Lyuba-chan - I know! I know! Getting there!

hellokitty8182 - It's really great for learning different techniques! My hair is now on the longer side itself - but I think I'll still be able to do a number of these. For the short bobs, etc - it's just a matter of pinning the excess hair up to create a fake bob. My main problem is more the fact I have my fringe cut - which limits some of the styles...however, they do show how to curl Bettie Page type fringes backwards to have fringe-less styles.

I just got back from Kinokuniya. I had a hard time locating the book  It was in the fashion design section on a bottom shelf. I would have missed it if not for the Taisho Kimono coffee table book which was right beside it and caught my eye first...

I read it cover to cover on the train ride home. Some of my thoughts at a glance:

- The book consists of translated magazine articles, and I feel that they really retain the feel of the original articles...you will feel like you are reading a magazine.

- Seems like they selected the articles that would of most help to beginners at casual kitsuke, there's a small kitsuke section at the back entirely in English :katana: But only step-by-step instructions for nagajuban, kimono, nagoya obi, yukata and kai-no-kuchi musubi (which is odd, most books would use a bunko as the "basic" knot for hanhaba).

- There are translated articles of interviews with Japanese women who wear kimono as everyday clothes and how they caught the kitsuke bug.

- Despite the title, there is not a lot of description of vintage styles (i.e. Meiji, Taisho, early Showa) so don't expect any tips on how to wear short kimono or the like. Most of the book is aimed at creating a relaxed, casual everyday look.

What I liked:

:lovelove The "agony aunt" section where people could write in and ask for styling tips. Much like IG! But it's not that extensive. How not to be too "safe" when choosing colours, etc.

:lovelove The article on zouri. Four women describe their favorite ones.

:lovelove The article on second-hand kimono shops in Asakusa.

What I didn't like:

:( The article on raiding your mom's closet for kimono. Most of us non-Japanese don't have the luxury of having a closet of hand-me-down kimono to raid.

:( Most of the coordination pages focus on winter and summer seasons only. Some spring, but almost no autumn?

:( A lot of the articles talk about recycling vintage kimono into tsuke obi, but don't have actual instructions.

:( I'm a fan of modern, polyester kimono and vintage pre-war styles, the wool and tsumugi coordinates didn't quite cut it for me. They seemed rather drab...maybe Nana-o caters to a more mature demographic, there's a lot of talk about dressing down so as to blend in with your colleagues in western dress at work. But if you like tsumugi and Oshima, this is definitely for you.

So, all in all, I think that this book was an interesting read, and it was a good break from just looking at pictures in Japanese-only kimono books/magazines. But I was disappointed by the lack of vintage pre-war styles and modern kimono.

I do hope that there will be a healthy demand for this book so that Nana-o does not stop just at one book and will continue to publish more volumes.

I have my copy. I love it! I found the articles quite interesting, but I haven't finished reading it yet.

My favourite quote so far: "When you first start wearing kimono it's important to wear what you want, and wear it to death. People can't progress to the next stage in their life if they are still dealing with unrequited love!" - Ima Kikuchi

I do agree with ensquared that I was left wanting more, but this surely is a good start. And I do hopealso that they will publish another edition. Because I am in my 40s, I find the information in here very helpful to me. This is not catered to younger girls who only want to wear furisode. This is for people who have got past that stage and want to wear practical every day kimono. It states in the beginning that this book is for ladies in their 20s, 30s and 40s. But I suspect other ages will find it useful too.

I think it is an excellent addition to anyone's kimono book library.

ensquared, the target population for this magazine are women from mid twenties to forties. These ladies, though, usually don't go for full Taisho outfits or kimono-hime styling, though the magazine often features Taisho pieces combined with other modern items, as they feature Mamechiyo and modern designers items.

I like very much the original Japanese magazine because it has a "you can live in kimono" breeze that don't have another modern kimono magazine, more stiff and formal, and way more conservative. I think it's because they want to spread kimono as more common clothing they don't present very eye-catching outfits, but more quiet ones you can wear to work withouth catching too much attention (this would be discouraged in many workplaces, I think).
I have all the issues of this magazine and they sometimes go for all Taisho kitsuke, flamboyant vintage items and some stylists in the very modern side, like Fumiko Kobayashi (I've discovered her name in the kitsuke section) who in spite of being a not so very young lady, quite often wears Taisho kimono. She and her daughter had an interesting article featuring "fake" undergarments :)
But for this book they have chosen coordinations mainly by Yoko Akizuki, who has a more subdued style.

About riding your mom's closet for kimono, let's try not to be too literal: obviously our moters doesn't have kimono, but the most part of inexpensive kimono at ebay and YJA are from 50's to 70's and in the styles featured in the article, so probably they thought this article would be helpful for foreing kimono lovers.

I liked the article about summer undergarments & odd tricks, and have learned some new names .
But I missed the DIY articles about converting kimono in obi, making juban sleeves and some komono, and cleaning different kinds of fabrics. An one about edo-komon, and....
So I really hope they will publish more books.

I don't have my copy yet - it should be arriving tomorrow...but if we want them to publish more - why don't we all write to the publisher?

Maybe we can get the information to the publisher and post it in here. The more people who write saying "ZOMG! MORE PLZ!" - the better chance they might do more?

@U no Hana: I see that Nanao has so much more to offer than what has been translated in this book...I'm really hoping to see some DIY tsuke-obi instructions. And maybe I should pick up some issues of the original magazine with more flamboyant coordinates?

@Immortal Geisha: Writing to the publisher sounds like a good idea. Anyway here's the address

Kodansha International Ltd

ensquared, perhaps you would like better other magazines and books. If you give me a little of time, I'm preparing reviews especially for you. I say this because buying a magazine only for one or two articles perhaps doesn't make sense at all. In any case, I will look up the issues and will tell you the ones that have more Taisho outfits, though I believe they are out of print now.

Writting them is an amazing idea! I think they have a "contact us" link in their website, but I can't find it now

I forgot to mention that there is a fantastic reference and shop section in the back. Not all of the websites listed have an english page, but what fun to have a look through anyways. :)

I have one copy of Nana-oh from a few years ago. There was a good article on cleaning tabi and storing accessories.

Thanks for the review, ladies :)

I have ordered a copy today. Have to wait a few days to get it though, but ordering it in the UK was cheaper than using Amazon Germany

Before I forget to mention they published a book focused in DIY kimono: instructions for widening wingspan, lenghtening sleeves, patterns for making tsuke obi, an all in one padding undershirt, a kappogi, zori covers, a bag and some small items like chirimen obi-kazari. EDIT: it has too instructions to customice obi with appliquè embroiderings or ribbons.

Amazon.jp

I purchased it but I lost it in the bus two days after :angerburst :angerburst so I can'te remember all the content; as far as I can remember the instructions and patterns were pretty clear. But I couldn't read it in depht.

Having a photo reference for a particular alteration can be really useful. Helps explain what's going on.

This is what I was meaning when I said "instructions" :P and instead of reading I must say "guessing". ( It has sounded like I could read japanese ant it's not true! )

It would be handy to be able to show people wanting to alter kimono (I sell them at quilt shows sometimes - I'm doing a charity sale of some at a craft show at Bristol next week. These aren't my personal collection but belong to the business, but I figure I can donate 50% of the ticket price to tsunami relief funds).

Finally got time to scan a couple of pages for anyone who's wavering about whether to buy it!

Scans here:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/greygoat/5569479024/ (my fave outfit)
http://www.flickr.com/photos/greygoat/5568895281/
http://www.flickr.com/photos/greygoat/5568895001/
http://www.flickr.com/photos/greygoat/5569482018/

Good points:
Firstly, I absolutely loved the fact that it's in English. Hopefully the take-up of it will be so good that the publishers commission more!

It definitely has a magazine feel to the content, more than a book. The magazine itself must be a pleasure to subscribe to. The photography is very atmospheric, a mix of traditional and quirky but always very soft and feminine.

There is a fascinating section on little interviews with kimono enthusiasts from different backgrounds. I was really pleased to see one from Kimono Sarasa, a blog I subscribe to because they always seem to have really audaciously coloured vintage kimono - and they're really good about matching brights with brights and always balancing it well. So it was good to see the people behind the blog!

The articles are focused on the practical aspects of wearing kimono in a casual day to day style - creating a mix and match wardrobe rather than one or two arresting outfits.

One of my favourite sections was the Coordination Clinic, a kimono agony aunt page. Taking the customer's own kimono and obi and just changing the accessories to achieve a different mood made me appreciate the little things like obijime a lot more.

On the downside
- I'm not that fussed about basic how-to-wear sections in books - perhaps because I'm not starting from scratch - I can see why it's included in the book, but it's not interesting to me
- like others have said, some DIY bits and pieces would be interesting
- I'd like to see more dramatic kimono, but I suspect that's not the aim of this book! So not really a criticism. When it's titled 'vintage', it's focusing on older everyday kimono, as one's mother or grandmother might have worn, not the flamboyant retro designs

It made me want to wear kimono as a matter of course, in an environment where it isn't considered unusual - to have to worry about a workable wardrobe for wearing to my job, to Tesco, etc!

Why don't make us a standard review of this book? I mean, to have the whole important info together and accesible to everyone in "our library".
rubyminky you have worked a lot yet ( I mean, scans and so on), so perhaps you have more right to do the review. So making a new one withouth asking you first looks like stealing your work or something... What do you think?

This is also one of my fav outfits :) though thinking the fur is real makes me feel uneasy (it happens to me with all the fur stoles they show)

U no hana, I don't mind either way! If you'like to do a review, go for it :)

There are lots of us here with the book so we could all write it. It would be a shame to lose all this great feedback by starting a new thread. Mods, what's the best way?

Let's do it this way -

Write up the review following the IG standard. Us admins will edit the first post with the review (and attribute the review to the writers, of course) - then we'll move this entire thread over to the book review section.

Sound good?

Just got the book (two copies...actually - by accident. Our mistake will be someone else's fortune!)

At very initial glance inbetween eating dinner and feeding Lily - it's awesome. I really am enjoying it. I'll post more as I actually get a chance to sit down and read properly.

Mine arrived today (post office tried to deliver it late last week but I was away). Can't wait for bedtime reading - have been browsing it already.

I really hope they produce more in translation. Being able to read the text without having to get help or get the dictionary out and labour through it is great.

Got my copy a few minutes ago :katana: I think I will have some tea and reading this afternoon :)

edit:
Ok, had my tea and some :cookie: and went through the magazine. I love it! (Ok, I still have to read most of the articles :smil3: )
But am I the only one now with an overwhelming desire of wafuku shopping?
God, the zori article wasn´t good for me.... :drooldrool:

I got this book about a month ago (I never come to this sub-forum so I was not aware others had noticed this book.) Anyway, I really like it and I am glad I bought it. Nice to have another book in English to read but I like it most of all for all the cool ideas. I love creating my own stuff and it can help save some money too.

I like the section about wool kimono. They make it seem very comfortable to wear (not during hot summer months of course) and I enjoyed the kimono "hacks" or cheats. :P
