昭和モダンキモノ―叙情画に学ぶ着こなし術

SHOWA MODERN KIMONO
Lyrical art of painting to learn how to dress.

YAYOI MUSEUM - KEIKO NAKAMURA (edit)

Image

A compilation of illustrations, vintage photos and ink drawings from early Showa, made by Keiko Nakamura, a Yayoi Museum curator.
The beautiful images not only depict clearly the kimono (as they were published at fashion magazines to learn how to dress kimono) but also the atmosphere of the time.
In each chapter the images are grouped by topics, labelled in Japanese and English at the bottom right part of the pages, making the use of book really easy even for non-japanese readers (like me! ;) )

TOPICS

- Patterns
- Illustrators
- Gesture & Kimono
- Beautiful Gesture
- Beauty on kimono
- Obi
- Haori
- Han-eri
- Juban & Kasane
- Shawl
- On cold day...
- Look at textile...
- Bags, Umbrella, Obiage, Fans, Footwear... (vintage photos)
- Hairstyle (both Japanese and Western)

THE BEST
Discovering that cobweb pattern on black kimono or yukata and experimental mixing yofuku & wafuku, aren´t modern inventions... and fashionist ladies wore kimono with earrings!

THE WORST
Nothing... (but I wish it had the text tanslated into English!)

RECOMMEND
For all kimono wearers interested in vintage kimono and kitsuke. It will be a very inspirational resource, very useful to match vintage kimono outfits.

DON'T RECOMMEND
People very sensitive to images of ladies smoking or playing cards. It was very modern and chic at the time, but now maybe it doesn't look very politically correct...

I have this one and i have to say it's a pretty, pretty, pretty little book :) i love this era - especially the short hairstyles. The thing I love about this book is the COLORS! It's so hard to get a sense of the colors of the time period from photographs, so to have such a detailed color reference is very helpful when putting together era-appropriate kitsuke combinations.

I'm always nervous about ordering Japanese kimono books when I can't see inside - I can't read Japanese and depend on being able to see a lot of pictures. I took a chance with this book after translating the title and reviews as best I could, and I was NOT disappointed :kitti:

Oh! I'm SO glad to see this book reviewed!

This is by far one of my all time favourite "kimono" books. While illustrations - it gives fantastic insight to colours, pattern combinations, how dounuki should be showing (I always wondered if on the skirt part of kimono, if dounuki should show like it does at the collar....this book seems to indicate it does!).

My favourite picture is the girl sitting, holding playing cards - with the black cat around her shoulders. It reminds me of Charlie (my cat) and me :)

I'll try to get a few more scans to put in here this weekend!

I just received my copy today!! I haven't looked through it in depth yet, only flipped through it, but it looks like it's going to be another one of my favs! Thanks so much! :D :D

I will add that I was rather taken aback when I saw that there were some pages in... purple and white? Well, non-coloured pages, but it doesn't detract from the book at all :)

Wow! songbird, you have the kimono! It's wonderful!
Now you need a similar obi, and then, post a pic in Life Imitates Art challenge ;)

I'm sorry I didn't say anything about non-colour pages  but many of them were vintage photos and I found it quite logical. Sorry!

I just recently found this book! I looooove it! I read it (skipped over words I didn't know, so I should really go through it again with a dictionary) on the way to and from work over a week or so. I realized my 2nd day in that there was English in the lower corners for the patterns (a little slow...), since I'm not all that knowledgeable with flower names and such it was very helpful.

I do wish the pages from vintage magazines were easier to read, though...

This book really taught me a lot about patterns and the style in this period, which was exactly what I wanted! :lovelove I want another book like it but I keep finding things that are more about someone's kimono style and coordinates, I really liked the combination of coordinates via the illustrations along with lots of info.
