Is it weird to wear a tonbi-coat ?

Post by Wim » Sat Apr 15, 2017 5:29 am

Good morning all,

When I showed my wife a picture of a tonbi coat (鳶) her first reaction was "waaahh.. old .. long time ago" so I started to wonder if wearing a coat popular in the meiji-period would be indeed a bit strange/weird to wear in the current times as an "everyday" rain coat.

So, would wearing a tonbi like

be the same as wearing this (women fashion used since men's fashion hasn't changed much)

I don't know if it's weird or not but I absolutely love them  if I were a guy I would wear one!

It would be like wearing a Victorian men's cape coat. It could look costumey or it could look really stylish - it all depends on how you style it!

Thanks for the replies.

Decided to buy it, 3 cm short according to a size table, can live with that :smile_samurai:
Perfect for those colder evenings en drizzling day's.

Aahh.. can't wait for it to arrive (hopefully without "service costs" of the mail company) :dead_samurai:

I have one, which I rarely wear since I only wear it with kimono, but I enjoy wearing it and it's not so different from more modern men's kimono coats: the only difference with some of them is that instead of a cape they have kimono-type sleeves.

Glad to hear you enjoy wearing the tonbi :smile_samurai:
When I get home and finish my meal for the day I usually change back into the kimono (like Namihei Isono in Sazae-san) so I will probably wear it more often when the dog wants to enjoy the outdoor scenery :wink_samurai:

The one that will be added to my collection:
